Genetically modified foods are much more pervasive than they ever have been before. Unfortunately for our independent farmers they have been cowed into submission by the Monsanto Corporation. Here are some suggestions for avoiding genetically modified foods:
- Reduce or Eliminate Processed Foods. Estimates suggest that 75 percent of processed foods contain genetically modified ingredients.
- Read Labels. Please read the labels! If you spy the following listed ingredients don't buy it. Stay away from corn flour and corn meal, dextrin, starch, soy products, and margarine. Most soy products now come from GM crops. The only exception to that would be if it is listed as organic.
- Go Organic. Buy organic food items. That's the best way to ensure that you and your family aren't part of some elaborate corporate scheme to control the food supply.
- Please Read the Produce Stickers. The PLU code for genetically modified produce has five numbers - the first number starts with the number eight (8). Conventionally grown produce will sport a sticker with four numbers. Organically grown produce has five numbers and starts with the number nine (9).
